So it was today in 1936 that this fuzzy picture represents the fire ravaged Crystal Palace. Nothing has since replaced the Crystal Palace and it seemed to be an area of contention between the council and public. Plans have been drawn up and shelved (thank goodness) of a massive cinema and car park occupying the site, square and unsightly as the palace was majestic and beautiful. There have also been plans for a reworking of the park itself. Hmmm well we will just wait and see.Blurb at bottom of image as follows:
At its height, more than 400 firefighters tackled the blaze but ultimately couldn't save the structure. Erected to house the Great Exhibition of 1851, the huge iron and glass building was originally located in Hyde Park before being moved to Sydenham, S E London, which cost ten times the £150,000 construction price. A marvel in its day, 14,000 exhibitors gathered in its nearly 92,000 sq m of space.

ReplyDeleteYes that's how I feel about it. But the council are determined to make 'money' from the site at relatively little cost. Everything has now been mothballed because of the economic downturn, but it is only a matter of time. I don't think they care to see a beautiful attraction on the site plus they are probably worried it will not match the old CP if they do rebuild. Are there contentious planning permission stories at historical sites in Portsmouth?
